Any contractor performing qualifying renovation, repair, or painting (RRP) work on pre-1978 homes or child-occupied facilities must employ at least one Certified Renovator who has completed this training.

Cancellations less than 48 hours before the class begins will receive no refund.
Cancellations more than 48 hours before the class begins will receive a full refund minus a $50 administrative fee.

Course Description: Weatherization Attic Safety Training
This comprehensive 2-day course equips weatherization professionals with the essential knowledge and skills to safely and effectively perform energy-saving upgrades within attic environments. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of potential hazards, best safety practices, and techniques for navigating and working in attics while prioritizing their well-being and the integrity of the building. Through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on exercises, attendees will develop confidence and competence to execute attic weatherization projects safely and efficiently.

Key topics covered over the two days include:
• Identifying Potential Hazards: Recognizing structural issues, electrical dangers, air quality concerns (mold, dust, insulation), temperature extremes, confined space risks, and pest/animal infestations.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Proper selection, inspection, use, and maintenance of respirators, protective suits, gloves, eye protection, and head protection.
• Safe Access and Egress: Establishing safe pathways, proper ladder use, and identifying emergency escape routes.
• Tool and Equipment Safety: Safe operation and maintenance of common weatherization tools used in attics.
• Working at Heights: Understanding and implementing fall protection measures.
• Hazard Communication: Interpreting Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safe handling of weatherization materials.
• Lockout/Tagout Procedures: Safely isolating energy sources.
• Emergency Preparedness: Developing and practicing response plans for attic incidents.
• Safe Material Handling: Techniques for transporting and handling insulation and other materials.
• Ventilation and Air Quality Control: Understanding attic ventilation and minimizing exposure to contaminants.
• Working Around Obstructions: Safely navigating and working in complex attic spaces.
• Maintaining Situational Awareness and Effective Communication.
• Hands-on Practical Exercises: Applying learned safety techniques in a simulated attic environment.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for individuals involved in residential weatherization programs, including energy auditors, insulation installers, crew leaders, and quality control inspectors who work in or around attic spaces.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Select and properly use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Energy Auditor training will provide the groundwork for new/existing weatherization workers interested in understanding and expanding their knowledge of weatherization. Topics covered in this course include “House as a System”, “Energy Movement”, “Calculating Envelope Energy Loss”, and much more. The curriculum for this course is aligned with the NREL Job Task Analyses (JTAs). This training session is primarily in class with additional technical training in advanced blower door diagnostics, a review of current installation methodologies, and combustion safety instruction. Class participants will also get actual in-field training performing an energy audit. A knowledge quiz will be given after each module and students will be required to pass a final exam on the last day of training to receive a certificate of completion.

Comprehensive Wx Crew Leader / Installer Training (4 day course) is focused on learning basic weatherization processes, policies, and requirements based upon ODOC, DOE, BPI, and OSHA rules.
Upon 80% successful scoring of the final exam for this course, a "Certificate of Completion" will be mailed to the registrants. CEU's will be gained through this course, which are valid towards BPI National Certification requirements for continued education.
