CAZ stands for Combustion Appliance Zone and it is the area that your water heater, furnace, wall/floor heater, and/or boiler is located as well as your gas fireplace, gas stove, gas oven, gas broiler, and even your gas dryer to a lesser degree. CAZ testing by a trained technician to make sure these gas appliances are working safely.

Course Description: Comprehensive Weatherization Health and Safety Training
This intensive 2-day course provides weatherization professionals with a foundational understanding of essential health and safety principles applicable to all aspects of residential energy efficiency upgrades. Participants will learn to recognize common workplace hazards, implement effective risk mitigation strategies, and adopt best practices to ensure a safe and healthy working environment throughout their weatherization activities. The course emphasizes proactive safety measures to protect workers and building occupants across a variety of weatherization tasks.

Over the two days, key topics will include:
• Foundations of Workplace Safety: Introduction to hazard identification, risk assessment, and the hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE).
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Essentials: Understanding the importance of various types of PPE (head, eye, face, hand, foot protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection), proper selection, fit, use, inspection, and maintenance for different weatherization tasks.
• Safe Work Practices for Common Hazards:
o Slips, Trips, and Falls: Identifying and mitigating slip, trip, and fall hazards on various work surfaces and during transitions.
o Lifting and Material Handling: Implementing proper lifting techniques and using equipment safely to prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
o Working at Heights Safely: Understanding fall hazards, proper ladder use, and the basics of fall protection systems (if applicable to general tasks).
o Hand and Power Tool Safety: Safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of common hand and power tools used in weatherization.
o Electrical Safety Basics: Recognizing electrical hazards (shocks, burns), safe work practices around electrical systems, and proper use of extension cords and power strips.
• Respiratory Health and Safety: Understanding common airborne contaminants encountered during weatherization (dust, insulation fibers, mold), the importance of ventilation and dust control, and basic respirator use and care.
• Chemical Safety Awareness: Understanding the potential hazards of common weatherization materials (sealants, adhesives), interpreting Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and practicing safe handling and storage.
• Working in Varying Environmental Conditions: Recognizing and mitigating risks associated with extreme temperatures (heat stress, cold stress), confined spaces (awareness level), and poor lighting.
• Emergency Preparedness and Response: Basic first aid awareness, emergency procedures, and knowing how to respond to common workplace incidents.
• Maintaining a Safe Work Environment: Housekeeping practices, proper waste disposal, and fostering a culture of safety on the job site.
• Introduction to Relevant Safety Regulations and Best Practices: Overview of key OSHA requirements and general industry safety guidelines applicable to weatherization.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for all individuals involved in residential weatherization programs who perform energy efficiency upgrades, including new and experienced technicians, energy auditors, and crew members seeking a comprehensive understanding of general health and safety principles.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Identify common health and safety hazards encountered in various weatherization tasks.
• Understand and apply the hierarchy of controls to minimize risks.
• Select, use, and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for different jobs.

Energy Auditor training will provide the groundwork for new/existing weatherization workers interested in understanding and expanding their knowledge of weatherization. Topics covered in this course include “House as a System”, “Energy Movement”, “Calculating Envelope Energy Loss”, and much more. The curriculum for this course is aligned with the NREL Job Task Analyses (JTAs). This training session is primarily in class with additional technical training in advanced blower door diagnostics, a review of current installation methodologies, and combustion safety instruction. Class participants will also get actual in-field training performing an energy audit. A knowledge quiz will be given after each module and students will be required to pass a final exam on the last day of training to receive a certificate of completion.
